One hundred thousand metric tons of cashew nuts are wasted every year due to improper use, said Saranga Kanchani Ratnayake, Attorney-at-Law, Chairperson of the Sri Lanka Cashew Corporation.
Although there is a demand for cashew nuts, a new program is being prepared for them as they are wasted as the cashew nuts are not being used properly. She said that there is a huge demand for cashew nuts in the country and although the annual requirement of cashew nuts in the country is around 25,000 metric tons, only 12,000 metric tons are produced.
The research will be carried out in the future to produce wine using cashew nuts and the relevant research work has been completed and the cashew wine will be introduced this year as well. She also stated that the Cashew Corporation has a license to produce wine using cashew nuts.
In addition, the Cashew Corporation is focusing on developing a methodology for the export of cashew nuts.
