The Ministry of Development, Allied Industries and Export Promotion has decided to stop the importation of brown sugar.
Minister of State Janaka Wakkumbura stated that the annual sugar requirement of the country is 600,000 metric tons.
He also stated that one hundred and twenty thousand metric tons of it is brown sugar.
Minister of State Janaka Wakkumbura stated that this program is expected to reduce the annual expenditure of Rs. 40 billion on sugar imports.
