The Ministry of Power and Energy says that hydro power generation in the country has dropped to 20% due to the prevailing dry weather. According to the Ministry, 42% of electricity is generated by thermal power plants and 2% by wind farms.
Also, 38% of other state-owned power plants and private sector power plants are added to the national grid. The Ministry of Power and Energy stated that there will be a need to purchase electricity in the current situation.
Accordingly, it has been proposed to purchase about 300 megawatts of electricity from the private sector, but the Cabinet has given its approval to purchase only about 128 megawatts of electricity. The relevant request has been submitted to the Public Utilities Commission for permission to do so.
An emergency meeting of the Public Utilities Commission has been convened next week to approve the matter.
