State minister Vidura Wickramanayaka has said excavations will take place at the Bodhirajarama Temple in Habarana to unearth its history after gazetting it as an archaeological site.
The history behind the temple is surrounded by divided opinion as some groups believe that the demise of Lord Buddha had taken place in the area.
“Experts are providing numerous interpretations,” Ven. Bogaswewa Vipassa Thero, the Chief Registrar of the Palugaswewa Sasanarakshaka Balamandala said.
He insisted that the archaeology department must investigate and uncover the historical importance of the site, media sources reported.
