83 Wild Elephants killed since January 2021

83 wild elephants died so far in 2021, said the Secretary to the Ministry of Wildlife and Forest Conservation Somaratne Vidanapathirana at a media briefing on Wednesday (24th of March).

The Secretary said the deaths were caused by electrocution, shootings, various explosive material, falling into wells, train accidents, and natural causes.

He said that several special projects are being implemented to address the human-elephant conflict.

Director-General of Wildlife Chandana Sooriyabandara says that 50 percent of elephant deaths are due to human activities and most of them are due to electrocution, various explosive material, poisoning, and shootings.
